The Sacro Monte of Orta San Giulio, built in three distinct periods, between 1590 and 1788, stands on an hill in the center of the peninsula of Orta, on the eastern shore of the homonymous lake, in the province of Novara. It is part of the group of the nine Alpine Sacred Mounts in Piedmont and Lombardy, considered by Unesco as a human heritage. The twenty chapels that it has represent episodes of the life and miracles of St. Francis of Assisi to which the Sacro Monte is dedicated.
